The benefits of adding mock exams to your child’s 11 Plus preparation tools
The 11 Plus can feel like a big step for many children, but with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. One of the most valuable ways to support your child in Year 5 is by giving them the chance to experience mock exams before the real thing.
At Teachitright, our mock exams, held over the spring and summer before the 11 Plus, are designed to mirror the actual GL Assessment 11 Plus format used in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, or the Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) test for Reading School, offering children a chance to build confidence, practise key skills, and reduce exam-day nerves. In this guide, we explain why mock exams matter and how they can help your child succeed.
Understand what to expect
The real 11 Plus or FSCE test is likely to be your child’s first experience of a formal exam setting. Mock exams provide a safe space for children to:
- Sit papers under timed conditions
- Navigate multiple-choice answer sheets
- Work through papers for relevant subjects including verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English, maths and creative writing
- Understand how to manage their time and stay focused.
By attending a Teachitright mock exam, your child can familiarise themselves with the pace, pressure and practical details of the real day, so nothing feels new or scary when it really counts.
Identify strengths and areas to improve
After each mock exam, you’ll receive a detailed feedback report showing:
- Your child’s scores in each subject
- Key areas where they’re doing well
- Topics or skills that may need extra revision.
This kind of insight is invaluable as you plan the final months of 11 Plus preparation. It helps focus revision and tuition where it’s needed most, saving time and building confidence.
Build exam confidence and resilience
Even confident pupils can find exam day nerve-wracking. Sitting multiple mock exams over the summer helps children:
- Stay calm under timed conditions
- Learn how to recover from a tricky question
- Practise staying focused for longer periods.
At Teachitright, our experienced team ensures that children feel supported and encouraged, no matter how they perform. Every exam is a learning experience, and each one boosts confidence.
How many mock exams should children take, and when should they take them?
We recommend that children take at least three mock exams during the spring and summer of Year 5. Our mock exams use different papers, so your child will get the chance to complete more of the question types they might be presented with in their 11 Plus exam, and will be able to clearly track their progress through the reports they receive after each mock exam.
It is a great idea to start mock exams early, so you and your child have plenty of time to address any areas they might still need to focus on before their actual test day. Leaving mock exams too late can cause stress, as there is not enough time to work on areas your child might have struggled with. It’s best to give them plenty of time – a good way to approach it would be one in the spring, one at the start of the summer, and another later in the summer.
What will your child receive after their mock exam?
Your child gets to keep the question paper at the end of their mock exam to take home. A few days after each mock exam you will receive:
- Detailed results breaking down all of your child’s answers (which they got right, wrong or did not answer)
- Information about how your child performed in relation to others in their cohort
- Detailed review videos produced by our expert tutors, giving hints and tips on the questions from the mock exam your child sat.
