Getting the balance right for your family
If your child is aiming for a grammar school place, one of the biggest questions you may have as a parent is: when should we start preparing for the 11 Plus? Starting too late can cause stress and pressure, while starting too early might feel overwhelming or unnecessary. So what’s the right balance?

Start early, but gently
While the 11 Plus is taken in Year 6, preparation ideally begins in Year 4. This doesn’t mean formal exam practice at age 8 or 9, but rather laying the foundations in key areas such as reading comprehension, mental maths, and problem-solving.
In Year 4, children benefit from:
- Growing their vocabulary through reading
- Developing fluency with number facts and basic arithmetic
- Being introduced to verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills
- Building confidence and concentration in a learning environment

Step up preparation in Year 5
Year 5 is the most important year for 11 Plus preparation. From the start of the academic year, children can begin building exam-specific skills and gradually move towards timed practice and test strategies.
Key areas to focus on in Year 5:
- Verbal reasoning and vocabulary development
- English comprehension and grammar
- Mathematics including worded problems, data handling and algebra
- Non-verbal and spatial reasoning
- Practice with multiple-choice formats and answer sheets

Include mock exams and revision in the final months
In the final term of Year 5 and the start of Year 6, it’s important for children to experience mock exams under realistic conditions. This helps them get used to the pressure of timed papers, exam techniques and switching between papers and answer sheets.
We also recommend joining a revision camp during the summer holidays before the 11 Plus exam. These focused sessions are a great way to consolidate learning and boost confidence before the big day.
