How to help your child feel calm, confident, and ready to succeed

The 11 Plus exam can feel like a big moment – not just for your child, but for you as a parent too. At Teachitright, we know that preparation isn’t just about past papers and practice questions. How you approach exam day itself can make a real difference to your child’s confidence and performance.

Here are some tried-and-tested tips to help your child feel calm, focused, and ready on the big day.

The night before the exam

  • Stick to a calm routine: Encourage an early night and keep things relaxed. Make sure your child has everything packed and ready – exam materials, snacks, water, and anything else they’re allowed to bring.
  • Avoid the sugar spike: A special treat might seem like a nice gesture, but high-sugar cereals can lead to a crash in energy and focus. Stick with a balanced, steady breakfast that fuels concentration.
  • Lead with calm confidence: Children pick up on your mood. The more relaxed and positive you are, the more likely they are to mirror that mindset.

On the morning of the exam

  • Start the day early: Mornings can be hectic – try to avoid rushing, which can add unnecessary stress. Build in time to arrive at the exam venue early and, if possible, take a short walk to help your child settle.
  • Pack wisely: A clear pencil case with the required stationery, a water bottle, and a healthy snack for the break can go a long way in supporting focus and energy.
  • Toilet check: Encourage your child to use the toilet before the exam begins so they can stay focused throughout.

During the exam

  • Listen carefully: Different exam boards may give different instructions. Make sure your child knows to listen closely and follow guidance exactly.
  • Keep up the pace: Time is tight, so remind your child not to get stuck. Encourage them to make their best guess, mark the question to revisit if there’s time, and move on.
  • Never leave a blank: Always write something – even a guess. It increases the chance of a correct answer and ensures that answers don’t shift out of sync on the mark sheet.
  • Check if time allows: If they finish early, they should use the time to review and double-check their answers.

At Teachitright, we equip children with not just the academic tools but also the confidence and mindset they need to thrive on exam day. With the right support and preparation, your child can walk into the exam room feeling calm, capable, and ready.
